History in North Dakota and the Bakken

An Amerada heritage in North Dakota
North Dakota's first producing oil well was an Amerada Petroleum Corporation well in Williams County near Tioga. It was spudded on September 3, 1950 and, according to the North Dakota Geological Survey, was completed as a producer on April 4, 1951; it was the discovery well of the Beaver Lodge field [1][2]. Amerada and Hess Oil and Chemical announced a merger in December 1968; the combined company later became Amerada Hess and then Hess Corporation [3]. That is the corporate lineage behind the Hess Bakken position. (That discovery was in older rocks, not the Bakken; the Bakken boom came decades later.)
Building the Bakken position
Hess's Bakken position includes its acquisition of American Oil & Gas Inc. The merger agreement was dated July 27, 2010. Hess's 8-K says the merger was completed on December 17, 2010, with each American share converted into 0.1373 shares of Hess common stock and the company renamed Hess Bakken Investments I Corporation [4]. The operating entity named on state records today, Hess Bakken Investments II, LLC, is the name shown on the Department of Mineral Resources' 2026 top-ten slide [5].
Gas handling was a central part of Hess's North Dakota story. In March 2014, Reuters reported that Hess's Tioga gas plant expansion in Williams County was online [6].
Chevron takes over
Chevron announced it had completed its acquisition of Hess Corporation on July 18, 2025, after a favorable arbitration outcome on Hess's offshore Guyana asset. Chevron's release listed 463 thousand net acres of high-quality inventory in the Bakken among the assets it added, and quoted the former Hess chief executive describing the Bakken as a place where Hess was a leading oil and gas producer [7]. State records still show the operating entity as Hess Bakken Investments II, which is why this page and our index card show both names. The Department of Mineral Resources ranked it fifth in 2026, at 26.56 million barrels (9.6% of North Dakota production) through August [5].
October 2026 midstream restructuring
On October 6, 2026, Hess Midstream announced a definitive agreement under which it would acquire Chevron's DJ Basin gathering and storage assets, pay Chevron $200 million in cash, and cancel all of Chevron's ownership in Hess Midstream and its general partner. Chevron's Bakken gathering and processing agreements would be extended from 2033 to 2045 at lower tariffs, and Hess Midstream said it expects Chevron to drop from three Bakken rigs to two in December 2026 [8]. We summarized this item in our news feed (linked below).
The DMR's active-rig list, as read on October 25, 2026, showed three rigs under Hess Bakken Investments II, LLC: one in Mountrail County and two in Williams County [9]. Hess Midstream is a separate, publicly traded partnership that serves the Bakken position; it is not covered by this operator card.
